Holding the sheet music!

I discovered that there is no good way to have the sheet music in front of you while playing the alphorn.  When I'm at home, I have a normal sheet music stand, which works well enough, but when I'm outside, the stand is not feasible anymore.  That's when I discovered the sheet music holder that you can attach to the horn (actually it's fo...

Superman

From ear, I tried and could successfully create the Superman theme song so it fits on the alphorn.  It's a bit tricky to play because the range of notes you must jump is quite large, Nevertheless, I have posted the sheet music I made!   Download PDF File Here

The making of my alphorn

My alphorn was handmade by one only a few alphorn makers remaining in Switzerland.  Willi Glaus is looking for an apprentice!  He also makes presentations about how an alphorn is made.  If you wish to purchase an alphorn from Willi, feel free to visit his website at  http://alphornbau-thunersee.ch/

Amazing Grace

I found a simple version of Amazing Grace, and I transposed it to "fit" on the alphorn range of possible notes.  It kind of works.  Enjoy!     Download PDF File Here

Embouchure videos

I could not get a single note out of the alphorn until I watched this YouTube video on embouchure.  I found it very useful.  I still have not perfected pitch, but at least I could learn how to buzz my lips! https://youtu.be/lLE_-ly8hrQ

What notes does the alphorn play?

My first surprise was that what alphorn players call Middle C is actually F# (or G flat). Therefore, making a duet with other instruments suddenly becomes more complicated. Nevertheless, assuming that you accept that you must pretend that F# is Middle C, the below notes are possible. This brings some challenges, as it limits what compositions ...

Mouthpieces

Spent quite some time trying to find the "perfect" mouthpiece.  After having purchased about eight of them, in the end I settled on one which I use the most: Alfons Neumann alphorn mouthpiece, 18mm https://www.hoornshop.com/en_GB/a-42948719-3623036/alphorns-and-accessoiries/alfons-neumann-alphorn-mouthpiece/ What a fantastic and pure soun...
